Arrow Video Has New 2K Film Restoration Of Writer/Director Douglas Grossman's Hell High Ready For Blu-ray On July 19

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has circled July 19 on the summer release calendar for a new 2K film restoration (from the original camera negative and supervised by cinematographer Steven Fierberg) of writer/director Douglas Grossman's 1989 horror film, Hell High.

During the film’s production, in the Westchester, New York area (just north of White Plains), in 1986, Grossman had several working titles before finally settling on Hell High.   Shortly after the film was completed, Christopher Stryker, who plays Dickens, succumbed to AIDS … the film remained uncirculated for two full years before indie distributor JGM Enterprises (Puppet Master, The Lost Empire, Shadowzone) picked it up for a limited (regional) theatrical release in May of 1989 … Prism followed with a VHS release later in year and Media Blasters put out a DVD edition in 2004.   It has been out of sight since.

Grossman gets right into the action with a prologue that introduces us to swamp girl Brooke Storm, who is playing with her little baby doll, when two teens (played by future stunt man Webster Whinery and Karen Russell, a dancer and future yoga instructor) arrive and little Brooke scurries off to the safety of the swamp.   A lover’s spat causes the spurned teen to rip Brooke’s baby doll’s head off and they start to leave … the furious Brooke throws a bucket of swamp goo on them and their motorcycle as the drive by … Wham!   Two dead teens!!

We skip ahead something like 18 years and Brooke (Maureen Mooney) is now a high school biology teacher.   And we get right into a conflict when she asks one of her students, a budding sociopath by the Dickens to collect test papers from the other students in her class.   He obliges and then promptly hurls the stack of tests in her face.  

Her response?   She slaps him silly.  We now have our set-up, with Dickens vowing revenge.

We soon learn that Dickens has some buddies — a little gang, if you will — Jon-Jon (in his film debut, Christopher Cousins — as Ted Beneke in the Breaking Bad TV series, as Martin Weiss in the Bosch TV series, plus such films as The Grudge 2, Wicker Park, Draft Day), Smiler (Jason Brill) and Queenie (Millie Prezioso).   They are hell-raisers, who join Dickens in his attempts to get even with Brooke for slapping him.

Remember way back when little Brooke accidently killed the two teens when she was a kid?   Dickens torments trigger her memories and before you know the little pranks escalate into a murderous rampage.   The blood flows!!

Hell High is a tight little indie horror entry that comes loaded with bonus goodies from Arrow Video.   We begin with two commentary options, the first a vintage one with Grossman and the second, a newly-prepared commentary option with Grossman and cinematographer Steven Fierberg (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, The Joyriders, Days of Wrath, Repo Chicks … and a ton episodic television work).

There are alternate opening titles, a deleted scene, vintage video sessions with Grossman and co-writer Leo Evans and a half-dozen featurettes — “School’s Out!,” “A Beautiful Nightmare,” “Jon-Jon’s Journey,” “The More the Better,” “Music is Not Sound” and “Back to Schools: The Locations of Hell High.”

 

 

 

 

Bayview Entertainment Prepares Two New DVD Workouts From Kelly Coffey-Meyer For Release On June 28

Bayview Entertainment will be teaming up with high-energy fitness specialist Kelly Coffey-Meyer on June 28 for the debut of two new workout DVDs.   It is time to get fit, so let us get to it!

First up is 30 Minutes to Fitness: Cardio Fit with Kelly Coffey-Meyer, which will require you to get your dumbbells out of the closet, dust them off and get them back into action.   Take a minute, go find them.

MVD Entertainment Group Bestows "Rewind Collection" Status On Director George Armitage's July 05 Blu-ray Launch

MVD Entertainment Group announced this past week that a new entry to the company’s popular promotional line of Blu-ray releases, “MVD Rewind Collection,” will be getting a new member on July 05.   This will be director George Armitage’s 1990 film release of Miami Blues.

How about this for irony.   Fred Ward, who got steady work after Silkwood, The Right Stuff and Swing Shift, decided to take a little control over the direction of his acting career by optioning Charles Willeford’s 1984 novel, “Miami Blues.”  He loved the character of Junior Frenger and he figured that if he had the rights to the book it would be just a matter of putting the deal together to play the character in the film production.

Smart.   Since Ward had worked with Jonathan Demme on Swing Shift, he knew exactly who he wanted for the direction of the film.   Demme said sure, but he didn’t want to direct, instead he agreed to be the line producer and brought in cult filmmaker George Armitage (Vigilante Force) to write the script and take over the directing of the film.

Now Orion Pictures gets excited, Jonathan Demme producing, the studio’s reservations about George Armitage vanished when they saw the script … Fred Ward saw everything come together.   There just had to be one more little change.   Ward gave up the role of Junior Frenger and agreed to take the part of Sgt. Hoke Moseley.   Casting for Frenger was opened up and eventually Alec Baldwin, who has gotten hot with Beetlejuice, Married to the Mob, Working Girl and The Hunt for Red October, got the spot … the spot that Ward first set out to get by optioning the book.

So, who is Junior Frenger?   He’s a hustler, a wheeler-dealer, a forger, a con artist … it is a long, long list of “accomplishments.”  

We are introduced to him as he prepares to land in Miami while he is busy learning how to forge the signature of some mark by the name of Herman Gotlieb.   In the airport he grabs a random suitcase and has an encounter with one of those Hare Krishna pests (Edward Saxon) and deals with him by breaking one of his fingers.

Later, at the hotel he tries to hustle a hooker by the name of Susie “Pepper” Waggoner (played by Jennifer Jason Leigh) into buying stuff from the stolen suitcase.   They have a good time anyway (wink wink).

Meanwhile, Sgt. Hoke Moseley (Ward) has gotten a call to head over to the airport, there’s been an incident.   It seems that the Hare Krishna dude went into cardiac arrest as a result of having his finger snapped.   So, it is up to Moseley and his partner to track down the mysterious Gotlieb.

Junior does what he does, hustle, steal, con and hooks up with “Pepper” again.  Meanwhile, Moseley does what he does and tracks “Gotlieb” down, not knowing that Junior, through a complicated series of events, is the guy he’s really looking for.

Miami Blues is a perfect “MVD Rewind Collection” addition.   Fast-paced, violent, sexy and funny as Moseley and Junior cross paths … until Junior’s luck finally runs out.   There is a cool twist involving “Pepper” at the end.

Bonus features include video sessions with both Alec Baldwin and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

 

 

 

 

 

Paramount Home Entertainment's The Lost City — Starring Sandra Bullock And Channing Tatum — Ready For Discovery On July 26

Paramount Home Entertainment has tabbed July 26 as the street date for a three-SKU home entertainment packaged media blitz of co-directors Aaron Nee and Adam Nee’s box office smash, The Lost City, starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum.

The ARR comes in at 123 days and this Sandra Bullock-produced action/adventure pulled in $90.7 million during its domestic theatrical run.  

Planned for distribution are single-disc Blu-ray, DVD and 4K Ultra HD editions, with the bonus features exclusive to the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD buying options.

Bonus goodies include deleted scenes, a blooper reel and a lucky seven-count on the featurettes — “Dynamic Duo,” “Location Profile,” “Jungle Rescue,” “The Jumpsuit,” “Charcuterie,” “The Villains of The Lost City” and “Building The Lost City.”   ­

 

Director Daniel Espinosa's Morbius Arrives On June 14 From Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will be delivering a three-SKU selection of director Daniel Espinosa’s Morbius, starring Jared Leto, to Marvel Comics’ superhero fans on June 14.

The transition from theatrical venues to the home entertainment packaged media marketplace works out to an ARR of just 74 days.   Domestic box office receipts currently stand at $71.5 million.

Configured for release are Combo Pack editions for both the 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) formats, plus a stand-alone DVD edition.

Bonus features common to all three SKUs are two production featurettes — “Defining the Antihero” and “The Good, Bad & Ugly.”

Exclusive to the Combo Pack presentations are outtakes, a blooper reel and three additional featurettes — “From Human to Vampire,” “Lights, Camera, Action” and “Living Vampire from Comics to Screen.”
