The Film Chest announced
this past week that it has unearthed and digitally remastered the original 1954
theatrical release of director Isaac Kleinerman’s Victory at Sea for DVD
distribution on Mar. 17.
The Emmy-winner series of
the same name delivered 26 episodes during the 1952/53 prime time television
season that focused on the U.S. Navy during World War II through the use of
actual combat footage. Since
television was still in its infancy, it was not uncommon during this period for
multi-part programming, including both TV series and theatrical serials, to be
re-edited and presented as self-contained theatrical releases (actually
reaching a much wider audience during the summer of 1954).
Narrated by noted
Shakespearean actor Alexander Scourby, this 98-minute presentation is tightly
edited and delivers a superb overview of the wide-ranging array of naval
engagements that marked an entire world at war between 1939 and 1945. This is quite the find by The Film Chest!
