At last! At last!
One of the most
anticipated home entertainment announcements of 2018 took place this past week
when Paramount Home Media revealed that the CBS All Access anchor series, Star
Trek: Discover – Season One, will be available as both DVD and Blu-ray
product offerings on Nov. 13.
All 15-episodes will be
available as a four-disc collection.
The good news is that the series has been renewed for a second season,
which should begin airing on the CBS All Access platform in early 2019.
This Star Trek series was a
tough one to launch in that it takes place roughly ten years before Captain
Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew of USS Enterprise began their five-year
mission way, way back in 1966. Film
technology has advanced dramatically in the past 50 years, so the cheesy look
of the sets and adventures from that period simply could not be the mainstay of
the new production, otherwise it would look like a Saturday Night Live
skit.
So the new starship, USS
Discovery, even though it is a predecessor to the Enterprise, looks more
advanced. Bigger budget, better film
technology, so there is nothing you can do about that.
The other problem — and
“problem” is perhaps a poor choice of words — is that the history of the “Star
Trek Universe” is well defined.
Vulcans, Klingons, Romulans — and eventually The Borg — are all part of
the mythology of the series. You can’t
just change all of that and still keep it a Star Trek series.
The challenge of writing
adventures within that context soon became a problem as conflicts between CBS
and the original production team, most notably, Bryan Fuller, led to changes
and a delay in the launch of the series.
With the arrival of Star
Trek: Discover – Season One and a new cast of characters, including Sonequa
Martin-Green (perhaps best known as Sasha from The Walking Dead) as Science
Specialist Michael Burnham, Jason Isaacs as Captain Gabriel Lorca and Doug
Jones as First Office Saru, the fan base had to adapt to backstories of the new
arrivals. The general consensus is that
it is a work in progress, with season two giving all involved a chance to
settle in and make mid-course corrections.
Nevertheless, the arrival
of Star
Trek: Discover – Season One on DVD and Blu-ray on Nov. 13 from
Paramount Home Media and CBS Home Entertainment remains one of most anticipated
home entertainment arrivals of the year.
Period!
As to bonus goodies,
there are deleted and extended scenes and a whopping ten production featurettes
— “Discovering Discovery: The Concepts and Casting of Star Trek: Discovery,”
“The Star Trek Theme,” “Creature Comforts,” “Designing Discovery,” “Creating
Space,” “Prop Me Up,” “Feeding Frenzy,” “A Female Touch,” “Dress for Success”
and “Star Trek Discovery: The Voyage of Season One.”
