Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Selects Nov. 12 For The Home Entertainment Launch Of Writer/Director Gene Stupnitsky’s Good Boys

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
One of the surprise comedies of the summer — and there were some real lame ones that got big theatrical pushes (choke, choke) — was writer/director Gene Stupnitsky’s Good Boys.   Imagine an R-rated version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and you’ve nailed it!!

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has targeted Nov. 12 as the street date for both DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions of this comedy done-right.  Yes, done-right … you can even argue that this is one of the best-written films of the year (we will reserve the honor of “the best” for Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in … Hollywood).

In any case, the ARR comes in at 88 days and domestic box office receipts were an awesome $73.3 million.   We are talking about a film rated-R, starring three sixth-graders.   Not since Stand by Me, which was also R-rated, has there been a coming-of-age film this good.

In case you missed it, because you didn’t know what “Good Boys” was all about (things can get lost in the summer crush of promotions, especially when there is so much noise revolving around all those big-budget super hero flicks), three six-grade boys, Max (Jacob Tremblay — he was Jack, the little kid, in director Lenny Abrahamson’s Room, plus such films as Wonder, The Predator, etc.) and his buddies, Thor (Brady Noon — as Tommy Darmody in the Boardwalk Empire cable series) and Lucas (Keith L. Williams — as Jasper in The Last Man on Earth television series) are on a mission to attend an in-crowd party where Max might have the opportunity to kiss Brixlee (Millie Davis — she also co-starred with Tremblay in Wonder, but is perhaps best known as the voice of Ms. O in the animated television series, Odd Squad), a girl he has a crush on.

Of course there is drama (lots going on with sixth graders) and nothing goes as planned (and that is the fun of it), but if you missed the theatrical run of Good Boys, circle Nov. 12 on your home entertainment viewing calendar … it is a must!!

There are also unrated deleted and extended scenes, an unrated alternate ending, a gag reel and five production featurettes — “Boys for Real,” “Welcome to Vancouver,” “A Fine Line,” “Ask Your Parents” and “Guest Stars”
