VCI Entertainment will be bringing to market on Nov.
12 a new 2K film restoration (from the original studio 35mm film elements) of
the directing team of Lewis D. Collins and Vernon Keays’ 1946 mystery/thriller,
The Mysterious Mr. M.
Both DVD (an upgrade from the new 2K restoration)
and Blu-ray (the first time available on Blu-ray) editions will be available.
This was the final serial produced by Universal
Pictures (the studio’s first serial was all the way back in 1914) … there were
63 full-sound serials produced by the studio between 1930 and 1949, including the
likes of The Vanishing Shadow, the
three Flash Gordon
adventures, The Phantom Creeps, Buck
Rogers and more.
Here we find the sinister Anthony Waldron (played by
Edmund MacDonald — Detour, Sherlock Holmes in Washington, Flying
Tigers) in hiding — the police actually think he is
dead, which gives him the perfect cover.
It is from his secret lair that he plans to steal the elements of a new post-war
submarine being developed by Dr. Kittridge (played ever so briefly by John
Hamilton, who is perhaps best known as Perry White in the Adventures
of Superman television show).
Kittridge has cleverly assigned the production of
each key component to a different scientist, but before Waldron can extract the
information from him, he inadvertently causes his death. Rats!!
To accomplish his goal now he will have to figure out who these
scientists are.
The same holds true for G-Man Grant Farrell (Dennis
Moore — Raiders of Ghost City, The Purple Monster Strikes), who
was assigned to protect Kittridge and his secret project … and now he has to
unravel the mystery of whom has what and who killed Kittridge.
To complicate matters further, there’s another
player at the table. A mystery “man,”
who goes by the name of Mr. M, and who helps (and taunts) Waldron through a
series of record recordings.
Pamela Blake (This Gun
for Hire, Chick Carter, Detective, Ghost of Zorro) co-stars
as Shirley Clinton, the love interest for Farrell, while Jane Randolph (Abbott
and Costello Meet Frankenstein, The Curse of the Cat People) is
properly sinister as Marina, one of Waldron’s “associates.”
13 chapters, 12 cliffhanging thrills and a final
reveal. Will Waldron succeed? Who is Mr. M? Will Grant and Shirley survive the certain-death
traps prepared for them in each chapter and find true romance? Nov. 12, the Blu-ray debut of The
Mysterious Mr. M answers these questions (and
more)!!!
