The Criterion Collection announced its September
slate of new film restorations that will be released as both DVD and Blu-ray
product offerings during the course of the month.
Topping the list is a new 4K digital restoration of
auteur filmmaker David Lynch’s 1980 Best Picture nominee, The
Elephant Man, which will be heading home as
both Blu-ray and DVD (double-disc) editions on Sept. 29.
Based on books written by Sir Frederick Treves
(played in the movie by Anthony Hopkins), “The Elephant Man and Other Reminiscences”
(1923), and Ashley Montagu, “The Elephant Man: A Study in Human Dignity”
(1971), David Lynch’s adaptation of these books was nominated for eight Oscars
… in addition to Best Picture, Lynch was nominated Best Director and in the
category for Best Screen Adaptation (he would later be nominated Best Director
for both Blue Velvet and Mulholland
Drive) and John Hurt would be nominated for Best
Actor for his performance as John Merrick.
Bonus features include archived video sessions with
David Lynch, John Hurt, producers Mel Brooks and Jonathan Sanger, director of
photography Freddie Francis, still photographer Frank Connor and makeup artist
Christopher Tucker; the 2001 short documentary titled The
Terrible Elephant Man Revealed; a
video session with David Lynch and critic Kristine McKenna and a 1981 audio
Q&A session recorded at AFI.
Other restorations heading home in September include
DVD and Blu-ray editions of both Brute Force and Naked
City (both 4K film restorations and available on
Sept. 8); director Claire Denis’ 1999 film release of Beau
Travail (4K restoration, available on
Sept. 15); filmmaker Francesco Rosi’s 1979 release of Christ
Stopped at Eboli (2K restoration, double-disc DVD
and single-disc Blu-ray on Sept. 22) and 3 Blu-ray/6 DVD Combo Pack release on
Sept. 29 of Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project 3 (a
six-film collection).
