Welcome to crazy. That’s what Bayview Entertainment has all lined for genre fans on Dec. 22 with the DVD release of writer/director Justin Paul Ritter’s KatieBird: Certifiable Crazy Person.
We are introduced to the lovely KatieBird Wilkins (Helene Udy — Evil Under the Skin, My Bloody Valentine, The Dead Zone) on a very sad day for her. It is the funeral of her beloved father, Merl (Lee Perkins — Dahmer vs. Gacy, The Whole Town Is Sleeping, Slime City Massacre), but we will come to know him as just “Daddy.”
Filmmaker Justin Paul Ritter (A Gothic Tale, The Amazing Adventures of the Living Corpse) doesn’t waste any time getting into the story. She arrives home, greets her lover, who we will also learn is her therapist/psychiatrist, Dr. Mark Richardson (Todd Gordon — Point Blank, Trapped in Perfection), demands sex and then, when satisfied, ties him up. The story of KatieBird can now begin in earnest.
We flashback to her youth with Daddy (Nicole Jarvis and Taylor M. Dooley play different versions of the younger KatieBird), who likes to take his daughter on long drives. Daddy also spent quite a bit of “alone time” in the barn back then, a place where his little girl was forbidden to go … until the proper time.
Of course, that day arrives and we confirm what we already suspected, Daddy is a serial killer and his, now teenage daughter, is about to go to school. Oh boy, what a world of horror is out there, just waiting for KatieBird to experience.
Ritter uses a multi-screen approach, not like filmmaker Richard L. Bare’s 1973 film, Wicked, Wicked (“Duo-Vision”), but more like panels that give different views to the action, or over-lap (honestly, it takes a while to get into the rhythm of it …).
So, mark Dec. 22 on your viewing calendar for the DVD arrival Bayview Entertainment’s KatieBird: Certifiable Crazy Person to see how KatieBird’s schooling went … and to find out if Dr. Richardson is the next victim or a new school mate.
