What a wonderful story … a drama that showcases the rich history of an iconic city.   That’s what Bayview Entertainment has lined up on Jan. 30 with the Blu-ray debut of writer/director Anastasia Tsang’s A Light Never Goes Out.

On the one hand you have a traditional narrative, Mei-hsiang (played by Sylvia Chang — Love Education, Office, etc.) is a grieving widow who is having a difficult time getting through the emotions of the loss of her husband.   He was one of the last neon sign masters in Hong Kong — a craftsman from a fast-fading history of lights, art, design and celebration.

She thought that he had retired, but she discovers in his workshop an unknown apprentice by the name of Leo (Henick Chou), who is trying to complete “the master’s” final project, the repair of a vintage neon sign.   Her daughter, Prism (Cecilia Choi), represents “the modern” and wants Mei-hsiang to shut it down and move on — after all, LED lighting is “the modern” and the old craftsmanship of neon is the past.

That’s the dramatic element.   A traditional story as Mei-hsiang, to honor the memory of her husband, vows to work with Leo to finish the project, even though she lacks the skill-set of her husband.

What filmmaker Anastasia Tsang does is to overlay the rich history and tradition of neon signage in the city of Hong Kong.   A history lesson combined with traditional storytelling … and it works like a charm.   Absolutely fascinating!

A Light Never Goes Out from Bayview Entertainment on Blu-ray this coming Jan. 30 … presented in Cantonese with English subtitles.
