MVD Entertainment Group Bestows "Rewind Collection" Status On The Apr. 09 Blu-ray Release Of Director Albert Pyun's Mean Guns

What a wonderful, over-looked action flick from the dawn of the launch of the DVD format.   Almost forgotten, but MVD Entertainment Group has locked into Apr. 9 as the street date for the newest edition to its popular “Rewind Collection” library of Blu-ray product offerings.

This would be none other than director Albert Pyun’s 1997 film release of Mean Guns, starring Christopher Lambert (cashing in on his Highlander fame), Ice-T (in an early film role and just before him becoming “Fin” on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) and the incredible Deborah Van Valkenburgh, who became a screen legend as Mercy in Walter Hill’s The Warriors.

There’s a long-standing debate over whether the film actually got released theatrically in November of 1997 (anyone have a ticket stub?), but it did surface on DVD in August of 1998 on DVD from Trimark, Vidmark, Studio (Lionsgate, pick one … lots of different labels under the same banner back then).   Perhaps Pyun will clear that up in the commentary, which MVD has as one of the bonus features.

This is an action film, make no mistake about that, but it is also a dystopian thriller (think: Escape from L.A.; Escape from New York).   I mean who builds a brand new prison, run by a crime lord (Ice-T), that becomes a hunting ground on opening day (nothing like wiping out the competition) with a $10 million prize to the last thug standing!!

Mean Guns is literally the perfect “Rewind Collection” title.  Deborah Van Valkenburgh is the icing on the cake!!!

Bonus goodies include the aforementioned commentary by filmmaker Albert Pyun, an introduction by Pyun and two newly-prepared video sessions with producer Gary Schmoeller, executive producer Paul Rosenblum and composer Anthony Riparetti.
