Decal Releasing, LLC shuns Nolan’s “Oppenheimer Model” to undermine producer/actor Sydney Sweeney’s Immaculate. Like it or not, Sweeney got patted on the head and shown how the movie marketplace actually works these days … art and hard work are secondary to “other” things.
First, let’s get the business of the physical media releases out of the way. Decal has tabbed June 11 as the street date for both DVD and Blu-ray editions of her film (with direction by Michael Mohan). The ARR works out to 81 days and the domestic box office came in at $15.3 million.
Back in 2014, long before Euphoria, Anyone But You and Madame Web — even before her role as “Snake” in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in … Hollywood — Sweeney auditioned for Immaculate. Andrew Lobel had written the script and she loved it … great, but nothing happened.
In 2021 Sweeney did writer/director Michael Mohan’s The Voyeurs and the subject of Lobel’s script came up. She looked into it, found Immaculate unproduced and available, so she acquired the rights … and did the one thing that actors who realize that beauty fades and that there are ten more waiting in the wings. She produced it (among other partners) … she also did the same for her breakout theatrical hit, Anyone But You.
As both producer and star, Sweeney made suggestions for changes in the script, which were incorporated into the film. Mohan would direct. Just before its debut at South by Southwest in March it was announced that Neon had acquired the film distribution rights (which are handled by Decal Releasing, LLC).The mistake that Sweeney, Mohan and the rest of the interested parties made in signing over the distribution rights was not insisting that Nolan’s “Oppenheimer Model” be part of the deal. Live and learn.
25 days into the film’s run, Decal Releasing/Neon abruptly announced the premium VOD window, effectively killing any future box office run. This VOD window was immediately cashed in on by the “Helper” community with the distribution of both DVD and Blu-ray editions of Immaculate.
Eight full weeks (until the “real” versions arrive on June 11) of piracy courtesy of Decal’s ignorance of just how successful Nolan’s distribution model is. Producer/actor Sydney Sweeney take note of this for future distribution deals. As to bonus features, director Michael Mohan provides commentary.
