Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment will be shepherding writer/director Cord Jefferson’s 2023 film adaptation of Percival Everett’s 2001 novel, “Erasure” — which was retitled for the screen as American Fiction — home on June 18 as a Blu-ray-only release.
Nominated for Best Picture, Jeffrey Wright for Best Actor, Sterling K. Brown for Best Supporting Actor and Jefferson for his Best Adapted Screening, American Fiction — a marvelous satire — arrives with a long-in-the-tooth ARR of 186 days. Domestic box office receipts were $21 million.
There is some good news here. Amazon MGM Studios handled the theatrical distribution, which is usually a graveyard for physical media, but Warner Bros. appears to have cracked that with this Blu-ray push.
Amazon MGM Studios inserted a premium VOD window 53 days into the film’s theatrical run (on Feb. 06), so the “Helper” community has been active with Blu-ray editions of their own, which were on the street within hours of that window opening up.
Not only is American Fiction a Blu-ray-only product offering, but there are no bonus features included with the release.
Perhaps, with a little luck, we will see The Boys in the Boat make a similar trip to the physical media marketplace via Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment in the weeks ahead. Ditto for Totally Killer, Upgraded and even the new Roadhouse movie (it’s a long list).
