Universal Pictures Home
Entertainment announced this past week that director Josie Rourke’s Mary
Queen of Scots will be getting a three-SKU home entertainment launch on
Feb. 26.
The ARR is
a quick-to-market 81 days … domestic ticket sales currently stand at $15.2
million. What is key about this move on
the part of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is the street date, which is
two days after this year’s Oscar telecast.
The nominations take place on Tuesday morning, Jan. 22 … clearly the
studio is thinking acting nominations for either Margot Robbie (as Elizabeth …
SAG nomination for Best Supporting Actress) and/or Saoirse Ronan (as Mary
Stuart), otherwise there would be no need to rush a film with this level of box
office performance to market (at this point in time).
With that said, planned
for release are both stand-alone Blu-ray and DVD editions, plus a 4K Ultra
HD/Blu-ray presentation.
Bonus features include
commentary from director Josie Rourke (first time film director … primarily
stage producer and artistic director), who is joined by Max Richter, plus there
are a trio of production featurettes — “An Epic Confrontation,” “Tudor Feminism”
and “Something About Marys.”
